Function of Retaining Walls

To address this issue, we employ a backfill approach using 3/4 clear gravel. This gravel facilitates drainage from the top to the bottom of the wall, where it is absorbed by weeping tile or pipes and then drained away. This process helps alleviate the pressure on the retaining wall.
It’s essential to note that retaining walls should not be constructed directly on soil; instead, they require a gravel base with an average depth of 6 to 12 inches, along with geotextile to separate the soil from the base. Additionally, any retaining wall exceeding 3 feet in height, whether made of concrete or interlocking blocks, should be installed on a concrete base with geogrid reinforcement.

There are four primary approaches to constructing retaining walls: gravity wall, piling wall, cantilever wall, and anchored wall. In landscaping, the most commonly employed methods are gravity retaining walls and cantilever retaining walls. Gravity retaining walls rely on their own weight and the underlying base for stability. They can be fashioned using masonry bricks, concrete blocks, or poured concrete. The stones or bricks may be securely bonded using construction adhesive or cement. On the other hand, cantilever retaining walls are typically constructed with reinforced concrete or mortared masonry. These walls are often reinforced from the rear or front to enhance their structural integrity
